Abstract: The paper discusses a problem of symmetry and asymmetry of harmonic organization in music. It explores the reasons and brief history of formation of the principles of symmetry in music. The main results of this exploration works with the fact that the principle of symmetry contradicts the essence and features of harmony, and should be regarded as optional. In addition, the paper considers some correlations with arts that are closely connected with space.
Keywords: symmetry, harmony, history of music, theory of music.
